Republic of Moldova calls for a clear-cut attitude of the mediators and observers regarding the latest developments in the Transnistrian issue

31 of January 2019, Chișinău - In the course of the meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions of the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Slovakia, the OSCE Mission to Moldova, the United States of America and the European Union, who are the mediators and observers in the Transnistrian settlement process, the MFAEI State Secretary, Tatiana Molcean, has exposed the position of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova on the provocative actions taken lately by the exponents of the Tiraspol regime.

The MFAEI State Secretary expressed the disappointment and the dismay of the Moldovan authorities in regards to the recent opening of an "official representation of Transnistria in Moscow", veiled under the auspices of a public organisation. In this context, it was mentioned that the Moldovan authorities consider the action flagrantly contradictory to the basic provisions of the Moldovan-Russian Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, signed in November 2001, as well as to the commitments assumed by the Russian Federation as an impartial mediator in the settlement process of the Transnistrian conflict.

The State Secretary also drew attention to Krasnoselski's so-called "decrees" from the 19 of October 2018, and 25 of January 2019, whereby seven localities on the left bank of the Nistru river in Dubasari district (Doroțcaia, Coşniţa, Pohrebea, Pârâta, Cocieri, Molovata Nouă and Vasilevca), as well as Varnița, on the right bank of the Dniester river, are declared as "temporarily under the control of the Republic of Moldova".

The MFAEI official mentioned that the authorities of the Republic of Moldova consider these acts as provocation towards all international partners involved in the negotiation process regarding Transnistrian settlement, which is likely to destabilise the situation in the Security Zone and trigger new tensions between the two banks of the Nistru river. The MFAEI State Secretary underlined that such destructive actions, along with the public statements of the representatives of the Tiraspol regime concerning their tendency to "obtain the international recognition of the independence of the transnistrian moldovan republic", ruling out any alternative for the settlement process of the Transnistrian problem, undermine the principle of small steps and confidence-building measures aiming at supporting the population in the conflict zone.

In this context, the Moldovan diplomat called upon all partners involved in the negotiation process, especially the OSCE Mission to Moldova and the Slovak OSCE Chairmanship-in-Office, with the request to take a firm attitude towards these defiant actions of Tiraspol, which, in the end, are undermining the negotiation process for the settlement of the transnistrian conflict.
